EXCLUSIVE: Director Boman Irani wants to follow Stanley Kubrick’s footsteps: “I don’t want anyone to say, ‘Yeh Boman Irani style film hai'”; opens up on his surprise Raja Shivaji transformation: “Riteish Deshmukh wanted me to have a full buzurg look”

April 30, 2026, was a special day for Boman Irani and the film industry in general. It was the day when the latest edition of Spiral Bound, the writing and mentoring initiative founded by the veteran actor, brought together some of the most influential voices in Indian cinema for an evening celebrating storytelling and mentorship, in collaboration with Moskino and Moscow Film Cluster, a key body which supports and develops the creative industry in Moscow, Russia. The who’s who of the industry were present in full force, and no wonder that the event became the talk of the town. The top three writers of the contest will head to Moscow and in an with Bollywood Hungama, Boman Irani spoke exclusively about it.

When asked if these writers will script Boman Irani’s next directorial after The Mehta Boys (2025), the veteran actor clarified, “I’d like to clarify that I have told the writers that if they win, it doesn’t mean that I should have the first preference. They are free to go wherever they want and whichever production house they believe will do best justice to them. If they want to work with Irani Movietone, we are very happy. I have not bound anybody and I don’t believe in right of way or right of first refusal, that is, it’s not like we should have the first preference to approve or reject a script. My intention is that these writers should blossom; they should be free to make their careers and evolve their writing. Ultimately, we have done it for the industry’s and not just Irani Movietone’s benefit.”

Boman continued, “I am not saying this to sound like a good guy. This is my honest, God truth. If I tell them that only I have the right to make films on their stories and in case I don’t get the time or chance to make the film, then will I keep them waiting for 3 years?”

It’s been more than a year since the release of The Mehta Boys. We asked what his next film would be all about and whether he’d like to make a spiritual sequel called The Mehta Girls? Boman Irani laughed out loud and added, “I want to do something completely different on the genre level. I don’t want people to assume that I’ll only make father-son stories. I want to go completely to the other end of the spectrum. Look at Stanley Kubrick. He made a sci fi, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); a comedy, Dr. Strangelove (1964); a dark adult flick, Lolita (1962); and then he also made a horror film, The Shining (1980). Matlab kya ho raha hai! It is amazing what the man pulled off. I don’t want anyone to say ‘Yeh Boman Irani style film hai’. No. I want to dabble in all genres.”

Last week saw the release of Riteish Deshmukh’s Raja Shivaji, in which Boman Irani played the role of Peer Baba. The actor looked unrecognizable, and it was amusing to see viewers in the cinema halls wondering if it was indeed him.

Boman smiled and explained how he came on board, “Ritiesh called me. He told me that he wanted me to have a full buzurg look! He said, ‘Make-up zyada mat lagana’. It was nice. The beauty of being recognized as an artist is that you are not recognized! Why should I want people to know it’s me? I’d rather get lost in the character.”
